How do I start?
If you have never done Pilates before or you have an injury/want to work on a particular issue, we highly recommend an initial consultation. A one-on-one lesson with a senior instructor will enable you to switch on the right muscles and learn the principles of Pilates.
If you’ve done Mat Pilates before but don’t have experience using a Reformer and want to join group classes, then choose 'Intro to Reformer'. If neither of the above apply to you, you can jump right in and start Reformer classes. If you’re still unsure, give us a call and we will help guide you to the best option.
How can Pilates help me?
Pilates works on the whole body by increasing strength as well as flexibility. Regular Pilates will help improve posture, decrease pain, help with muscle tone, increase joint mobility, and stabilise the core/torso. Pilates will help you move more efficiently in every day life and keeps you active and agile. Pilates can be life changing!
What do I wear?
Wear comfortable clothing, eg shorts and t-shirt/tank for men, leggings and t-shirt/tank top for women. We also ask everyone to wear Gripsox for safety and hygiene. These can be purchased in the studio for $15.
Will I loose weight?
If you want to lose weight, Pilates gives you the ability to move more efficiently which will help you to do weight loss cardio exercises with less discomfort. Pilates helps build strength and tone the core which can give you the appearance of weight loss because it can narrow the waist, make you stand taller and with more confidence.
How often should I do Pilates?
Pilates is a low impact method of exercise and like anything, has to be done regularly in order to see results. It can safely be done every day but we recommend 2-4 times weekly as a great way to make a difference to your overall strength, flexibility, posture and agility.
Whats the difference between Pilates and Yoga?
Yoga is based on a spiritual practice founded many thousands of years ago whereas Pilates is fairly recent and based on the physiotherapy/scientific concepts of movement. They are both Mind Body methods of exercises with Yoga encompassing a meditative way of moving and holding the poses whereas Pilates uses the body or special machines to add resistance to the exercises. Both Pilates and Yoga are great to prevent injury but Pilates has an option to do rehabilitation exercises to assist recovery.
How does Mat pilates differ from Reformer?
Mat classes utilise the body weight for exercises, while the Reformer adds resistance to the Pilates exercises via the use of the springs that form part of the machine. Pilates mat work is the basis for the entire Pilates system of exercises and can be adapted for different levels. Reformer exercises work the legs and other body parts in a more dynamic way and can tone the body quickly whilst being supported by the machine.
Is Pilates safe to do during pregnancy?
If you are pregnant, it is recommended you start earlier than later. We suggest listening to your body and not pushing things too hard. From the second trimester onwards some of the exercises will have to be adapted for you and that’s why we encourage a specific pregnancy class or clinical Pilates.
